Rob SAMSON

From January 1970 he was appointed as junior scientist at the CBS Fungal Biodiversity Centre in Utrecht. In 1983 he became the head of applied research. During his career he spent several short sabbaticals in Florida, Canada and Singapore. On April 1 2011 he formally retired but he is still active as emeritus senior researcher of Applied and Industrial Mycology research group.. He is appointed as adjunct professor at the faculties Plant Pathology and Food Technology of the Kasetsart University in Bangkok (Thailand). Since January 2009 he is also visiting professor at Instituto de Tecnologia Quimica e Biologica of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa in Portugal.

In May 2001 he received the USFCC/J. Roger Porter award by the American Society of Microbiology and the Mycological Society of America awarded him as Honorary Member in 2005.

On October 3 2009 he received the degree of Honorary Doctor of Agricultural Sciences of the Faculty of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala.

The International Mycological Association awarded him de Bary Medal for outstanding career research in mycology on August 8 2014.

He is the Secretary General of the International Union of Microbiological Societies since 2005 and is also involved as chair or member of several international mycological commissions.

SPECIALIZATION AND MAIN RESEARCH INTEREST:

The main field of research is the polyphasic taxonomy of the important fungal genera Penicillium and Aspergillus. Since these genera are very important in food and indoor environments several research projects are also focussed in these fields.

SCIENTIFIC OUTPUT:

Rob Samson has published 43 books. His first book together with Garry Cole is a classical mycological publication describing the conidial ontogeny of Hyphomycetes. The Introduction of Food- and Airborne Fungi has seen its seventh edition and currently the nine edition is being prepared. More than 11.000 copies of this book for the food mycologist and other researcher in applied mycologist have been sold. It is also translated in the Japanese and Indonesian language.

About 300 papers haven been published in refereed journals, often with the collaboration of many international scientists. More than 110 chapters have been written for books and proceedings. He has delivered numerous oral presentations including several key note lectures.
